Green Recipes ~ Homemade Bubble Bath

bubble bath

Clear or light-colored shampoo, water, table salt, food coloring, medium-sized bowl, small plate, spoon, toothpick; small, clean jar (jam jars work well)

If you’re looking for a great homemade gift you can make with the kids, try making bubble bath. You will probably have everything you need already in the house. To get started, pour 1/2 cup clear or light-colored shampoo and 3/4 cup water into a medium bowl and combine with a spoon. Then add 1/4 teaspoon salt and wait until the mixture thickens. Next, sprinkle a few drops of food coloring onto a plate. Take a toothpick and dip it into the food coloring, using it to slowly add food coloring to the shampoo mixture. Keep adding until you’ve achieved a color you like. Pour into a wide-mouthed jar and decorate by sticking on a pretty label. If you want to get really elaborate, you can cover the lid with a scrap of cloth and tie a ribbon around the top.

Green Recipes ~ Homemade Ice Cream In a Bag

Ice cubes (enough to fill each gallon-size bag about half full)

1 cup half and half

1/2 cup salt (The bigger the granules, the better. Kosher or rock salt works best, but table salt is fine.)

2 tablespoons sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 pint-size ziplock bag

1 gallon-size ziplock bag

Your favorite mix-ins such as chocolate chips, cereal pieces, or fresh fruit.

Serves 1

How to make it

Combine the sugar, half and half, and vanilla extract in the pint-size bag and seal it tightly.

Place the salt and ice in the gallon-size bag, then place the sealed smaller bag inside as well. Seal the larger bag. Now shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 5 minutes). Feel the small bag to determine when it’s done.

Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, add mix-ins, and eat the ice cream right out of the bag. Easy cleanup too!

Green Recipes ~ Window Cleaner

2 cups water

1/4 cup white vinegar

1/2 teaspoon dish detergent

What you’ll need:

a large spray bottle (for solution)

a large spray bottle of clean water

terry cloth hand towel

Spray the window surface with the solution.

Before it has a chance to dry, spray with clean water. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.

Again, be sure to rinse thoroughly, and before the solution has a chance to dry on window. It’s helpful to avoid windows directly in the sun, so they are not hot and don’t as quickly.

Green Recipes ~ No Cook Flour Finger Paint

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup water

2 teaspoons salt

Flour Paint

Combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of water and 2 teaspoons of salt in a small bowl. You may also use baby rice cereal, instant pudding or cooked cereals, instead of flour.

Mix the ingredients together until they form a thick paste. Use a spoon or an electric mixer on a low setting.

Gradually stir food coloring into the flour mixture until you achieve the desired color.

Store in an airtight container.

Green Recipes ~ Sour Gummy Stars

3 tablespoons gelatin

1/3 cup lemon/lime juice (you can also use water and just add extra lemon or orange oil)

3 tablespoons honey

Optional – Non-toxic, vegetable-based food coloring ( I used India Tree)

Optional – A few drops of lemon extract or food grade lemon/orange oil

Whisk lemon/lime juice, honey and gelatin in a sauce pan until there are no lumps.

Heat over low heat until it’s nice and melty, stirring constantly.

Add food coloring and/or extract if desired – you’re almost done now!

Grab an ice cube tray or silicone mold. You can use a basic pan, too, and then just cut into squares or use a cookie cutter after it’s set.

Pour in the mixture, then pop in the freezer for 5-10 minutes to firm up. Once they’re out of the freezer they will stay firm at room temperature.

Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
